Wild Venison

The most common breed of deer in New Zealand is the red deer this is what we know as venison. Red deer are widely distributed throughout New Zealand. They originate from some of the prestigious game parks in the United Kingdom. Our supplier sources most of their red deer from the Marlborough region.

Large animals can weight up to 100kg or more. A venison leg will barely fit into an oven in one piece, so if you intend roasting a leg fallow deer may be a better option. Meat from a wild red deer is lean and rich red with a very slight musky tang and some texture to it.

Venison tastes as many feel red meat should taste only richer and more flavourful. Wild venison is naturally more intense than meat from farmed deer.

Venison is significantly lower in fat and kilojoules than beef, yet it provides more protein. It is high is iron and low in cholesterol and as such is one of the healthiest meats available. Venison harvested from the wild is the best of all there are no drenches, dips, antibiotics or growth hormones.
